The word “advent” means “arrival” or “coming” and it’s a time for us to spiritually prepare for the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

The Jesse Tree is an Advent tradition dating back to the medieval period. The name comes from Isaiah, who prophesied about a descendant of Jesse, the father of David:

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
— Isaiah 11:1

This “branch” or “tree” refers to Jesus. Throughout this Advent season, we will prepare for his birth at Christmas each day, by tracing the story of Jesus from the Old Testament prophecies all the way to his birth both in our sermons and through our online Advent Devotional.
