Response to White Supremacist Attack in Charlottesville
Most of you are already aware of the events that took place this weekend in Charlottesville, VA. As we have learned from Jesus and the parable of the Good Samaritan, we are called to treat everyone as an equal. White supremacy is wrong and has no place in our church or in our society. Those directly involved are hurting, and many more brothers and sisters are traumatized by these events and their reminder of our country’s history of racism and the parts that still persist today.
As followers of Christ, we thoroughly and unapologetically reject any idea of white nationalism and its underlying philosophy of white supremacy.
We affirm the dignity and intrinsic value of every human being and especially people of color who have borne the brunt of the effects of this depraved philosophy’s influence in our nation’s history and its present.
We assert that the message of the Gospel confronts evil such as this and calls for repentance and a change of heart and mind for those who espouse it while providing a true path towards forgiveness and reconciliation with God and others.
In a time like this, where people who are created in the image of God are being forced to question their own dignity and worth, we have the opportunity to stand together, united under the banner of the Gospel, which asserts that we all share the same intrinsic value, no matter what voices would say or violent actions would argue.
