The Jesse Tree for Families: 10

GIVING THE TORAH AT SINAI

Exodus 19:1-20:21

When God’s people were finally free from slavery in Egypt, God gave Moses instructions to share with His people.

As the Israelites gathered at the foot of Mount Sinai, thick clouds swirled in the sky, darkening the land. Constant flashes broke the darkness as bright bolts of lightning swarmed the mountain, appearing and disappearing, and then appearing again. The ground shook as thunder slammed, and great blasts of some harsh, regal noise like a trumpet blared, deafening their ears. And as God descended on the mountain, smoke rose like a kiln, funneling into the sky and veiling his presence. Then God spoke, proclaiming the 10 Commandments from the mountain top in the hearing of all Israel.

In establishing the law, God made two truths abundantly clear: his standard is perfect and we are unable to live up to it. We can’t do it.

Family Thoughts

God did not demand these laws because He is cruel, He demanded them because He loves His people. In many ways, when we received the law, it brought us under a curse because it revealed our sin. It showed where we failed and did wrong things. And because of that, the law condemned us before a truly good judge. We are guilty before God.

But thankfully, God didn’t leave us in our guilt. Because a day was coming when the curse would be lifted, a day when God would send Jesus to fulfill every requirement of the law given to Moses on our behalf so that we would no longer be condemned. He never sinned and did everything right for us. And because of that, we would be found truly good before the Lord, as if we had lived perfectly.

Family Connect

God gave His people these rules, the 10 Commandments to be holy and good. Which commandment(s) or rule(s) help you be holy and good?

Pause to pray

As a family, thank God for sending Jesus to obey all the commands and to die in our place. Pray, in confession for things you do that do not please God.
