THE UNLIKELY HERO
Judges 6:1-7:25
After God brought His people into the promised land they forgot about God and His rules. They even started believing in other gods and became very wicked. God was angry with them and handed them over to the Midianites who were very cruel and wicked too. For seven years, the Midianite nation had been mean to the Israelites. This made them feel defeated, afraid and weak.
After a while, God heard His people crying out in pain and decided to save them. He called Gideon to help, and just like Joshua, he gave Gideon a battle plan that didn’t include swords or fighting. In the dark, Gideon and his small army of 300 men quietly surrounded the huge Midianite army, and all at once they blew their ram’s horns and smashed the clay pots. The Midianite army was so surprised and scared by all of this, they jumped up and ran away. Once again, God had saved his people!

Family Thoughts
Gideon didn’t feel like much of a hero. In fact, most of the time, he felt weak and afraid. When the angel of the Lord came to speak to him, he was hiding in a pit because he was afraid the Midianites would find him. But then, the angel of the Lord spoke to him and called him “a mighty man of valor.” And then God used Gideon to save His people from those same Midianites he was afraid of.
Even though Gideon was scared in the beginning, God took him, in his weakness, and made him into a brave hero. The important thing to remember is that Gideon’s courage and bravery didn’t come from himself, it came from God. Gideon was scared and afraid, but with God, he was brave and strong, because he trusted God. Jesus, who took on death, is the hero whose strength was visible in His weakness, trusting in God plan.
