The Jesse Tree for Families: Day 19

REPENTANCE

Luke 3:1-20, 7:18-30

John’s coming marked the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy of one who would prepare the way for Jesus (Isaiah 40:3). He came “in the spirit and power of Elijah” and preached a message of repentance, calling the Israelites to humble themselves before God and to turn away from their sin (Luke 1:17).

We too must humble ourselves and magnify the goodness of God through our own repentance. In the same way, we can prepare the way of the Lord for others by boldly sharing the good news of Jesus even in the face of resistance or persecution, knowing that the same spirit that empowered both Elijah and John now lives in us as well.

Family Connect

John the Baptist preached a message of repentance. As a family, ask each other, "what does it mean to repent?" What are some sins you need to turn away from?

Pause to pray

Lord,
Thank you for the role John the Baptist played in preparing the way of the Lord. Fill us today with your Holy Spirit like you did with his father Zechariah, that we might serve you without fear in holiness and righteousness all our days. May we this Advent season point people to Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, and tell others about the salvation he brings and the forgiveness of sins he offers only because of your mercy and grace O God. Let Christ become greater and we become less! Thank you that because of Jesus he has brought us out of darkness and into light and guides our feet into the way of peace.
