The Jesse Tree for Families: Day 22

THE NEW OUT OF THE NOTHING

Luke 1:5-25, 1:57-80

Zechariah was a priest who loved and believed in God. He had been waiting for God to send the King He had promised. One day, when Zechariah was working in the temple, God sent an angel to Zechariah to tell him he would have a son who would get the people ready for Jesus, God’s promised King.

Zechariah told Gabriel he couldn’t believe any of this. As a punishment for his unbelief and a reminder of the power of God, God took away his voice, and Zechariah was forced to use a tablet and pen to talk. Once their son was born, and Zechariah named his son John, his voice returned, he was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he began praising God and prophesying. This son is known as John the Baptist.

Family Thoughts

Zechariah, witnessing the power of God, had a change of heart. The promises made and kept by God reaffirmed to Zechariah that God would do all He said He would do.

These promises about the birth of John pointed to the greater promises made about the birth of Jesus, the one for whom John the Baptist prepared a way for. And just as Zechariah and his family now waited in anticipation for the birth of the Savior, we too should remember and celebrate this anticipation. Celebrating helps us enter into our own eager expectation for His return.

Family Connect

God used John when he was only a baby to prepare people for Jesus, meaning God often works through our lives in ways we see and ways we don’t. Do you believe that God could use you to prepare others for Jesus?

Pause to pray

As a family, pray, asking God to use you to help prepare others for Jesus’ return.
