Quite simply, we give because God has first given to us! How? Well, there are at least two ways. First, He has given to us every material thing we need to sustain our lives here on earth. Scripture clearly affirms that God is the Creator of all things, and because He is, the earth and everything in it belongs to Him (Psalm 24:1-2). Yet He has appointed us, the only creatures created in His image, as rulers and stewards over His creation (Genesis 1:28) and has given to us from His creation everything we need to sustain life. Even our ability to generate wealth comes from Him (Deuteronomy 8:18; 1 Chronicles 29:12). In short, everything we have is not ours but His; He has simply entrusted those things to our care.

Second, and far more importantly, He has given to us every spiritual thing we need to secure our lives for eternity; namely, forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with Him through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Again, Scripture affirms that, even while we were enemies of God because of our sin, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take upon Himself, by His crucifixion, the punishment of death we deserve for our sin and to grant us, by His resurrection, eternal life, forgiveness and reconciliation with God. Surely, there is no greater gift that He could have given us!

As a result, when we give to God through tithes and offerings, we aren’t giving to Him because He needs them. Rather, we give as a way of expressing (1) our acknowledgement that He is the true owner of all that we have and (2) our thanksgiving for all that He has given to sustain us…both here on earth and for eternity! And so, ultimately, our giving is an expression of our heartfelt worship to Him! In addition, from a practical perspective, our giving allows us to joyfully participate in God’s mission here on earth: a mission to know Him and make Him known in our neighborhoods, all parts of our city and across the globe!
